W’daub Awae: Speaking True a Kegedonce Press anthology

Edited by Warren Cariou

W’daub Awae: speaking true: a kegedonce anthology brings together some of Canada’s strongest and best loved voices on the aboriginal writing scene. It includes new writing by: Gregory Scofield, Richard Van Camp, Marilyn Dumont, Al Hunter, Joanne Arnott, Daniel Heath Justice and all your other favourite Kegedonce Press authors. Introduced and edited by the well-respected Warren Cariou, this anthology will become a classic in no time.

This anthology is a celebration of those extraordinary successes that Kegedonce has had since 1993, and of the pivotal role it has played in the recent history of Canada’s Aboriginal literature. But for me, W’daub Awae is equally a pointer toward the future, a sign of the incredible diversity and vividness and powerful language that we can look forward to from Kegedonce in the years to come. Each piece represented here is only one small part of the extraordinary work that all of these writers will continue to produce in the future. (excerpt from Warren Cariou’s intro to the collection)

Warren Cariou has written fiction and nonfiction about his home community in northwestern Saskatchewan, including Lake of the Prairies, which won the Drainie-Taylor Prize and was nominated for several other prizes. He teaches Aboriginal literature at the University of Manitoba where he also directs the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture.

ARTIST 12 MIDNITE CREATES A BIG BANG WITH 20 YEARS OF NEON ART

Saturday, April 18, Canadian Prince of Pop Art 12 MIDNITE reinvents the Lowbrow universe with BIG BANG! at The Chapel: 304 Dunlevy, Vancouver.

While modern art is often stuffy or inscrutable, pop art, often derisively (or proudly) termed “lowbrow” is anything but.

12 MIDNITE takes accessibility one-step farther with flashing neon car crashes, explosions and billboards for bad ideas.

“BOOM” 1990/ reworked 2008

It’s hard to believe that it’s been over 20 years since 12 MIDNITE returned to Vancouver in his 1959 Impala, roadworn and paint-splattered from series of continent-spanning FEAR NO ART, DARK CITY spray paint tours and holed-up in his gastown loft to embark on a totally new tack from the political stencil graffiti that had made him an 80s underground art icon.

His new work, mixing political pop imagery with neon lighting was debuted as simply “Scary Neon” on Halloween night 1988 at the seminal Pitt Gallery to little fanfare, but the small whisper grew to a roar when he returned with “ART MAD: CONFESSIONS OF A SPRAY PAINT FEIND” in May, 1989 at Brad Chernoff’s Macewan Arts gallery.

Somewhat inexplicably, this show, mixing Pop art and neon immediately sold out and overnight, 12 MIDNITE, punk vandal and hot rod hooligan, became rabidly sought out by moneyed collectors and surprisingly, even interior designers who wanted to make a splash. Public demand for his work, fueled by considerable media attention, including several appearances on the cover of Vancouver’s tabloid daily newspaper, generated enough momentum to open the legendary SMASH GALLERY OF MODERN ART, generally regarded as the rearing ground for a generation of alternative artists who continue to shape the Canadian art landscape.

Since then, MIDNITE has continued to march ahead of a motley crew of followers, painting compulsively, running a succession of galleries culminating with Chinatown’s Lucky Red, (Vancouver’s only real lowbrow gallery) building hot rods, recording albums that never seem to get released, and of course working with neon. He’s had a hand in keeping many of the vintage signs we all love lit, and has created countless pieces for Vancouver’s thriving film industry as well as commercial signs and commissions, along with his own artwort.

12 MIDNITE in the studio: 1988

In the past 20 years, the art world has grudgingly come to accept “lowbrow” art as not only valid artistically, but possibly THE definitive modern art movement of our time.

BIG BANG is 12 Midnite’s way of pushing lowbrow one step farther.

The ride aint nearly over yet.

“UNBROKEN” 2008

One additional note: 12 MIDNITE shows are well known for presenting a collection of his latest hot rods, but sadly his 1963 “Boneville” hearse, which was to be a centerpiece of this show went out with a big bang all its own when it caught fire in rush hour traffic at King Ed and Main in mid march.

12 MIDNITE’S BIG BANG

APRIL 18-MAY 16, 2009

On Friday, February 13th, (just in time for Valentines day) the Bouffons will be let loose for the first time in public to give a performance of the original (really off, off Broadway)
production of “Fools For Love…Bouffons Do Classic Love Scenes.”

What is a BOUFFON? People think it is a clown. But, clowns mostly seek approval from their audience. Bouffons don’t give a s..t. That’s where the fun begins. Don’t miss this pre- anti-Valentine’s Extravaganza – a first for Vancouver! Classic Love Scenes
(Romeo & Juliet, Street Car Named Desire), Poems, and Songs (My Funny Valentine,
When the Moon Hits Your Eye) and more, by our gang of fearless bouffons!

Where: The Chapel Arts 304 Dunlevy Ave. (@Cordova)
When: Doors open at 7:00 pm for the pre-show display - Showtime is at 8:00
What: Bouffon Show, preview of the art show “The Big Heart”, cash bar, live music, & guaranteed laughs!
Cost: Pay What You Can (proceeds go to space rental)

Based on the teachings of Jacques Lecoq of Paris, “Le Bouffon” is an exploration of the ironies, and absurdities of human existence. “Le Bouffon” is a clown of sorts (but an
intelligent clown) & he comes from another world, perhaps the inner world of the planet.

Its distorted appearance liberates its character to mock, imitate, and laugh at the rituals of the human being – and get away with it! His opinion is made clear through his large, exaggerated gestures. Mimicry is his ultimate pleasure & there is no limit to the expressions of “Le Bouffon.”

Have you left your children in the Philippines to find a better life in Canada? Nanay is a testimonial play that puts these different worlds of need and desire into collision. It uses the words of domestic workers, their children, nanny agents and Canadian employers to explore the complexity of live-in care giving in Canada. Realized as a multi-media event, Nanay takes the audience through a series of encounters in search of a deeper understanding of the human costs of Canada’s Live-In Caregiver Program.

- From the gutters of Vancouver’s east side rises a vibrant tale of 18th century decadence.

Break out your powdered wig! This November, Spectral Theater Society will be transforming Vancouver east side’s Chapel Arts into a decadent 18th century French Salon in local playwright, Blake Drezet’s shocking new tale of seduction and horror. “The Velvet Edge”, set in 18th century Europe, tells the tragic tale of an English poet and his new bride as they are seduced by the luxury of French high society and ultimately lured into a tangled web of betrayal, perversion and unspeakable evil. Featuring courtly costumes, lavish sets, outrageous make-up and special effects, mature subject matter and partial nudity, “The Velvet Edge” will be a truly unforgettable theatre experience, and one that poingently speaks to modern society’s moral plight in a world gone mad for success.

Founded in the summer of 2002, Spectral Theatre has been constantly dedicated to producing new and exciting theatrical works geared toward awakening the imagination and challenging the mind. Their prime directive is to breathe new life into what they view as the “rotting corpse of live theatre” by thrilling and chilling audiences with fantastic original stories delivered in unpredictable and innovative ways. The Velvet Edge presents their most ambitious project to date.

“The Velvet Edge” performs at the Chapel Arts (304 Dunlevy) Nov. 5th-6th & 8th-15th. show starts @ 8:00 pm. To reserve tickets call 604-569-2013. Tix $20 (donation.)

New Art Exhibition running from Aug. 15 - Sept. 14, 2008

The future belongs to the forward thinkers. The impetus of this exhibition is to provide a platform for emerging contemporary artists with very little restriction in content and form. The only criterion for the work in this show is that all artwork being shown has an element of external forward thought. This would include any issue from content to construction - ideas translated from mind to medium that show an element of progressive thinking.

Curated by local artist Randy Grskovic, THE FUTURE BELONGS TO THE FEW OF US STILL WILLING TO GET OUR HANDS DIRTY is designed to be a commercial stepping stone for these local, young, un(der)represented artists who have already proven themselves to not only be sellable but also valid in contemporary art practices. The two floors of exhibition space at Chapel Arts will hold these progressive works, allowing for a show that encompasses a wide variety of media and form, from photographic installations to large format paintings.

Opening Reception: August 15, 2008 7pm-1am
Exhibition Runs: August 15 to September 14, 2008
Gallery Hours: Wed - Sat, 12pm - 6pm and Sundays 1pm - 4pm
